Depending on the procedure, some instructions may be as simple as not eating and drinking for a certain time period, while other instructions might include other limitations and precautions that need to be strictly followed such as no exercise or strenuous activity. No matter how well you are feeling after treatment, it is extremely important to continue to follow our instructions. Failure to follow our recommendations can lead to complications such as damage to your mouth, severe discomfort, the failure of a successful treatment, and even the need for additional treatments. These complications may not only be painful, but can also cause added expense.
Do Not Eat or Drink Too Soon
One of our most common instructions is to avoid eating and drinking for a period of time following a treatment or cleaning. This is extremely important to follow, especially if you received a numbing agent. Eating or drinking while numb can be extremely dangerous because it is very easy to damage your mouth. When you cannot feel what you are chewing, it is very common to bite the inside of your cheek, your tongue, and even your lips. Biting any of these areas can lead to bleeding and sores developing in your mouth.
