Top 3 Lifestyle Choices Affecting Your Oral Health

Our top priority is helping you look great and feel good about your oral health. One of the best ways to achieve optimal oral health is to make wise choices in your daily life that do not negatively affect your teeth and gums. Unfortunately, some of the patients we see have not always made the best decisions, and it has affected their oral health. While some patients experience immediate problems, others can expect to have issues in the near future. We want to share some lifestyle choices that patients need to be mindful of to ensure they do not experience issues with their oral health. Read on to learn more.

Are Your Lifestyle Choices Negatively Affecting Your Oral Health?

One of our goals is to help you, our patient, feel confident about the state of your oral health. This is one of the reasons we are extremely passionate about routine dental care. As much as we do our best to improve your oral health when we see you, most of the responsibility falls on your shoulders. There are a few lifestyle choices that can negatively affect your oral health:

Frequent Snacking
Each time you eat, bacteria that is unhealthy for your teeth and gums lingers in your mouth. Constant snacking throughout the day, with a handful of something here and there, can lead to an increase in tooth decay. Aside from snacking, another big problem is drinking sugary coffee and soft drinks throughout the day. If you do not brush each time you eat and drink, this added bacteria can develop into decay-causing plaque. This is why we recommend avoiding frequent snacking and drinking outside of mealtimes.

‍

Constant Stress
You may be surprised that your stress level can affect your oral health. It is not uncommon for patients under constant stress to clench and grind their teeth. Over time, this can lead to uneven wear of the teeth and even cracked teeth.

‍

Using Teeth as Tools
Do you have a habit of using your teeth to open packages or bite off tags? If so, you may be causing serious damage to your teeth. The added pressure on the front teeth can cause cracks and breaks.
