Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?
Did we recommend a dental crown during your last appointment and you are a bit unsure of what a dental crown is and why you may need it? When a tooth is damaged beyond repair, but the tooth root remains intact, we may recommend a dental crown. A dental crown is a cap or covering that is placed over a damaged, decayed, or cracked tooth to protect it from further damage. Dental crowns are also used to hold a dental bridge in place and to finish a dental implant procedure. We may recommend a dental crown to:
- Restore a tooth that cannot be repaired by a filling
- Change the shape of a tooth
- Finish a dental implant or dental bridge
- Strengthen a weakened tooth
Information About the Procedure and Recovery
The process will be completed in approximately two office visits. During the first visit, we will remove any decay from the natural tooth, and the second visit will be to place the permanent crown. During the first visit, a temporary crown will be placed while the permanent crown is being fabricated. While you are recovering, it is important to avoid chewing on the side with the temporary. If the temporary falls out between appointments, be sure to contact our office as soon as possible.
