The Link Between Your Oral Health and Your Heart Health

In the instance of gum disease, the increased levels of bacteria in the mouth can begin to travel in the bloodstream affecting the tissues surrounding the heart. The tissues and arteries can become inflamed from the bacteria, affecting how the heart functions. Those who do not visit the dentist regularly for hygiene examinations and those who are susceptible to gum disease are at a higher risk for developing heart complications. Patients are more likely to experience issues such as coronary artery disease and stroke. Gum disease can also cause an increase in blood pressure and cause blood pressure medications not to work effectively. Recent findings are also showing a link between poor oral health and those who suffer from heart valve problems.

The most important step that can be taken to help your oral health and your overall health is visiting our office every six months for routine hygiene examinations. We not only clean your teeth, but we also inspect for the development of gum disease. We also recommend:

  • Brushing teeth thoroughly for two minutes twice a day
  • Flossing daily
  • Eating a healthy diet and limit snacks between meals
