How To Deal With A Dental Emergency

We don’t know about you, but we are thrilled that summer will be here shortly. Summer is such an exciting time, full of vacations, day trips, swimming, and fun with family and friends. While we hope you are planning a summer full of fun, we want to remind you that accidents can happen at any time. Dental emergencies are last on the list of what we would expect, but it is always good to be prepared. Read on to learn more important information about dental emergencies.

What is a Dental Emergency?

We always hope that our patients have optimal oral health; however, we know that is not always possible. A dental emergency can occur at any time. Generally speaking, a dental emergency is anything out of the ordinary that deals with your dental health. If you or a loved one experiences a dental emergency, the number one thing to remember is to remain calm. If you are unsure of the severity of the emergency, contact our office as soon as possible, and we will determine if you need an emergency appointment, need to head to the emergency room, or if the problem will heal on its own. Examples of a dental emergency include:

  • Toothache
  • Abscess
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth
  • Partially dislodged or knocked out permanent tooth
  • Severely bitten lip or tongue
  • Severe bleeding of the lips, tongue, or gums

How To Prevent an Emergency

The easiest way to prevent a dental emergency is to visit our office for routine hygiene examinations and cleanings. During these visits, we examine your teeth for any problem areas and make treatment recommendations. When you postpone appointments and treatments, it can lead to a problem that may eventually become an emergency. We also suggest following our recommendations. For example, if you have been diagnosed as someone who grinds their teeth, we recommend taking our treatment advice because teeth grinding can lead to issues like cracked teeth.

If you find yourself dealing with a dental emergency, it is extremely important to remain calm and assess the situation. For anything severe, we recommend heading to the nearest emergency room. Otherwise, be sure to call our office located in Montgomery AL, and we can schedule an appointment for you. We hope you have a happy and healthy rest of your summer, and we will see you in our office soon!
