Are Your Food And Drink Habits Negatively Impacting Your Oral Health?

There is the popular saying, “You are what you eat.” Not only does this saying apply to your overall health, but it also refers to your oral health. Your food choices and the way you eat may be negatively impacting your oral health and causing your current dental health issues, or they could lead to problems in the future. With the holiday season almost upon us, we want to share this information to make the changes you need to help yourself. We know that the holidays are a time for indulgence, but our words may help you make better choices during the upcoming season.

When to Eat and Drink

If you are a constant snacker or love to graze on food all day, you are negatively affecting your oral health. The same is true if you are constantly sipping coffee or a soft drink throughout the day. Each time you eat and drink, you are introducing bacteria into the mouth. These bacteria continue to linger on the teeth and can lead to issues with decay and the need for dental treatments. We recommend eating at set meal times. If you do need a snack during the day, we try choosing a healthier option and drinking plenty of water with your snack.

Drink More Water

We know that water may not be your beverage of choice; however, it is the best choice. Many other drink options are full of sugar and can lead to recurring dental decay. Other choices that you might think are great options may be damaging your dental enamel. Your favorite coffee drink, soft drink, and even seltzer can be causing major damage. We recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day instead.
